EHR305 Young People and Health Advocacy (8)

This subject utilises a number of HPE syllabus documents to provide a context for health in relation to the target population of young people. The social determinants of rurality, socio-economic status and at risk populations will provide the focus for in depth case study analysis to provide students with the opportunity to explore and engage with health issues impacting on the target population. Students develop and apply knowledge and skills relating to issues that impact on the lives of young people including sexuality, emotional, relational and mental health. Schools and community groups will provide settings for investigation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to argue the role of schools in developing health literacy in young people;
  • be able to accurately engage with relevant strands of HPE syllabuses to devise stage-appropriate quality learning experiences for school students which address sexual and mental health content;
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of the concepts and processes involved with sexuality, mental health issues for children and adolescents, child protection and grief and loss as they relate to relevant curriculum documentation;
  • be able to accurately engage with the Crossroads document and HPS framework to devise appropriate quality learning experiences for Stage 4, 5 and 6 students that are inclusive, celebrate difference and diversity, advocate for social justice, promote health and a sense of future; and have relevance and meaning beyond the classroom;
  • be able to critique the support structures and resources available to young people, to restore, maintain or improve their health status, and that of their local community;
  • be able to analyse policies and legislation that impact on the health of young people in terms of giving responsibility, encouraging participation and valuing their contribution;
  • be able to develop personal advocacy strategies for supporting the health of young people;
  • be able to critically analyse a health promotion program designed to promote the health of young people.

  • Priority issues affecting young people - mental health; sexual health.
