This subject explores the global spread of English over time and its implications for TESOL. It adopts a historical perspective to look into the formation of contemporary English while adhering to a critical perspective to examine the position of Englishes in the world in relation to power, identity, community, and knowledge economy. The subject provides an opportunity for students to critically reflect on their own life experiences and performances in the context of language teaching and learning.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to understand English language history including the main influences and phases;
  • become familiar with varieties of English and their implications;
  • be able to understand various sociopolitical, economic, and cultural influences on English and its varieties;
  • be able to understand the implications of World Englishes for TESOL; and
  • be able to reflect on and change their perceptions and practices.


This subject will cover the following topics:
  • An introductory history of the English language
  • Varieties of English in the world
  • Power of English through time including colonisation, language contact, policy, resistance, identity, knowledge economy, and other emerging issues
  • World Englishes as a theory and tool for TESOL
