ENG374 Civil Engineering Topic Tree - Conversion Masters (8)

The core of the engineering curriculum is the Civil Engineering Topic Tree. The overall Topic Tree contains around 1,000 topics, covering the range of different specialties within civil engineering. This subject takes the student through the Topic Tree to recognise prior learning, demonstrate mastery, and complete the topics necessary to be ready to commence a senior placement at the same level as a cadet continuing in their Bachelor of Technology (Civil Systems)/Master of Engineering (Civil Systems) combined degree. Selection of topics will be guided by a combination of individual goals and identified knowledge gaps.

No offerings have been identified for this subject in 2021.

Where differences exist between the Handbook and the SAL, the SAL should be taken as containing the correct subject offering details.

  • Evaluate their current understanding of civil engineering theory and identify gaps in their knowledge;
  • Possess a comprehensive, theory based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the engineering discipline;
  • Critically apply engineering techniques, tools and resources to an engineering workplace; and
  • Demonstrate achievement of aggregate objectives in the individual topics chosen by the student.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The topics for this subject are contained in the Civil Engineering Topic Tree. Each topic has its own objectives, learning materials and assessments. The overall objective for the subject depend upon the aggregation of the objectives for the topics chosen by the student. In order to successfully complete this subject, students will need to have demonstrated mastery for a minimum of 480 topics in the Topic Tree, including all topics specified in Schedules A and B.
  • Schedule A comprises the minimum set of topics from all branches on the topic tree necessary to commence work as a cadet engineer
  • Schedule B comprises the minimum set of topics from all branches on the topic tree necessary to graduate every CSU civil engineer degree
  • Topic Tree branches include: engineering fundamentals; communications and research; sustainability and the environment; geotechnical engineering; water and waste water; civil engineering practice; civil engineering construction; roads and transport; project management; business and entrepreneurship; materials engineering; engineering mechanics; and structural engineering; and specialist topics.
