ENG397 Technology Capstone Thesis (24)

This subject 'Technologist Capstone Thesis' permits the cadet technologist to demonstrate their civil engineering design skills by working in an engineering design team to solve a multidisciplinary integrated real engineering design challenge, identified in their final work placement. Cadets must apply their theoretical and technical knowledge gained elsewhere in the curriculum and the workplace learning to the design, and the outcomes should be delivered in both written (thesis) and oral (thesis defence) formats. Technologist Capstone thesis will be jointly supervised by an academic engineer from Charles Sturt Engineering and a supervisor from their work placement.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Define a practical engineering problem accurately and comprehensively in a workplace context and creatively apply systematic approaches to the pro-active conduct and management of engineering projects as part of a team;
  • Apply systems thinking and specialist engineering bodies of knowledge in sustainable and socially responsible engineering practice;
  • Communicate the problem definition, design processes and outcomes clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences and project a creative, entrepreneurial, and pro-active disposition;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of engineering design practices, reflective applications and contextual factors impacting on multi-disciplinary engineering challenges and application of systematic engineering synthesis and design processes;
  • Formulate an appropriate method for investigating an applied civil engineering problem and correctly and innovatively apply established engineering methods and design processes to create a solution; and
  • Use and manage information in a professional and ethical manner. Analyse raw information and draw appropriate conclusions in context with due consideration of the knowledge, methods, and assumptions within the engineering discipline.


This subject will cover the following topics:
  • An academic supervisor from Charles Sturt engineering and an industrial supervisor from the second work placement will be assigned with each cadet technologist for academic and technical supervision. They will guide the cadet technologist throughout preparation of the thesis
  • All the teaching materials are delivered through the thesis branch of Charles Sturt Engineering topic tree including Literature review-Introduction, Searching the Literature, Structure for the literature review, Data management, Reference management (EndNote), Critical reading, Critical Writing.

Residential School

This subject contains a 5 day Compulsory Residential School.

The residential school for this subject runs concurrently with that of ENG380.  Core events include: the conduct of the in-person elements of the dissemination of the thesis; participation in whole-of-course exhibitions of portfolio/ thesis work and thesis defence. 

Special Resources

This subject will be completed while the student is on placement in industry.  Industry placements may require travel and/or relocation depending upon the nature and location of the placement.
