ENG592 Engineering Portfolio - Professional (2)

In this subject students will undergo a mock evaluation against the Engineers Australia Stage 2 competencies for chartered status. Drawing upon their experience and their portfolios they will be required to undertake the assessment process, assembling responses to the 16 criteria from their portfolios and undergoing the same interview process as professional engineers seeking CPEng recognition. This will serve as a reflective exercise for students to capture their achievements throughout the course, and to guide them for continuing professional development needs after graduation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Practice ethically as a graduate engineer;
  • Reflect upon their practice as professional engineers and their preparedness to enter the profession as independent, autonomous professionals;
  • Have undergone the assessment process for chartered status, and demonstrated progress towards achieving CPEng recognition; and
  • Manage a portfolio of evidence to enable them to effectively evidence their capabilities to a technical audience.


This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The 16 Stage Two competencies are defined by Engineers Australia (see below). Drawing on previous portfolios, students will write a reflective essay against these competencies and then participate in an interview that further elicits information about their preparedness for CPEng status;

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 67 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

This subject is undertaken concurrently with the last 4 months of a students professional cadet placement. The student shall draw on their experiences from their work placement to complete the assessment tasks of this subject. The duration of the Workplace Learning, as outlined above, is 500 hours over 4 months.

Residential School

This subject contains a 5 day Compulsory Residential School.

The residential school for this subject serves as the synchronising face-to-face event for the student cohort during the second half of their final placement. Core events include: The conduct of the face-to-face interview elements of the evaluation for  chartered status, as well as any intensive rehearsal and preparation for this event; participation in whole-of-course exhibitions of portfolio / thesis work.


Special Resources

This subject will be completed while the student is on placement in industry.  Industry placements may require travel and/or relocation depending upon the nature and location of the placement.  No additional time in the workplace will be required for this subject, as it draws upon the students' previous experiences in the workplace.
