GER401 Choices and Options in Later Life (8)

This subject examines health and well-being in later life from a broad social health perspective. It is a foundational subject for the gerontology courses, introducing core knowledge and skills for the academic study of gerontology. A theoretical model of critical social gerontology is introduced together with examination of the social determinants of health in ageing. To illustrate these themes, the subject examines sociological issues associated with the life-style choice and self-determination of older adults. Four topic areas of later life are examined: life-long learning (which includes an academic skills development component to underpin students' own lifelong learning and current study); nutrition, exercise and active ageing; work, retirement and income; housing, transport and environmental issues.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to apply appropriate academic skills for postgraduate study in Gerontology;
  • be able to describe the social determinants of health in ageing (eg. socio-economic status (SES), education, ethnicity, geographic location, gender) and evaluate the impact on individual older adults;
  • be able to analyse social determinants of health in aging as constructed in policy in Gerontology; and
  • be able to research, analyse and apply a critical social gerontoloty perspective to options and choices available to older adults in key aspects of ageing through a detailed examination of one key topic from subject syllabus.
