This subject focuses on the management of appropriate information resources for organisations and communities, with particular emphasis on physical and digital materials required to achieve the goals of libraries, archives and related organisations. Attention is given to the assessment of needs, selection, acquisition, evaluation, ethics and deselection of resources, and issues such as policy formulation, budgeting, cooperative resource provision, outsourcing, preservation, electronic publishing and space planning.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify and discuss the needs of collection stakeholders;
  • be able to analyse historical, contemporary, and emerging trends and issues relevant to collection development practices;
  • be able to explain issues relating to the selection and acquisition of information resources;
  • be able to exhibit ethical decision making and reasoning to identify solutions to issues such as access, censorship, budgeting, outsourcing and cooperative resource provision; and
  • be able to analyse and synthesise issues associated with disaster management and preservation of collections.
