JST352 Professionalism and Resilience in Public Safety and Security (8)

This subject examines the meaning of professionalism in the domain of public safety. Public safety employees will typically have roles serving their communities in the police, paramedicine, nursing, social work and other related fields. Public expectations for the quality and sustainability of services provided by their public safety professionals are high. Students undertaking this subject who aspire to work in the public safety sector will explore the meaning of professionalism, and what it means to be a professional. There are many difficult challenges in working in public safety; challenges to organisations as well as to individual employees. In this subject, the concept of resilience, and being resilient will be explored. Students will reflect on their own personal motivation for pursuing a public safety career, and will examine strategies to build their personal resilience, their emotional intelligence and their personal and professional competence. This subject will explore a range of issues relating to professionalism and resilience in public safety, and will utilise case studies and reflective practice as a tool for developing learning.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • demonstrate a knowledge of their chosen profession, professional ethical codes of practice; and what it means to be a 'professional'
  • demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the role of resilience in personal, organisational and public contexts/settings
  • demonstrate an understanding of the importance of equality, diversity and cultural competence in the delivery of public safety and security services/public services
  • critically anlayse the relationships between themselves, their colleagues, their organisation, their profession and other service agencies, and the role of these relationships in maintaining public safety and security
  • apply the principles of reflective practice at personal, professional and organisational levels through the completion of a personal development action plan
  • demonstrate the literacy, research and communication skills necessary to identify, understand, interpret and use/apply relevant information from a range of sources, and communicate these effectively and respectfully according to the context, including in interactions with academic staff and students and in assessment tasks
