OCC404 Enabling Strategies: Advanced Practice (16)

This subject utilises problem-based learning to enable students to explore specialised occupational therapy practice and specific cases that present additional complexity. It is a capstone subject where students further develop their occupational therapy professional reasoning skills, while also building knowledge of five different practice areas. The five modules of learning may include: mental health with alcohol and other drugs; occupational rehabilitation; neurological rehabilitation; and early intervention for children. Students will have the opportunity to learn with and from other health professional students for at least one module of learning, to further develop their skills in inter-professional collaboration. The module topics will be flexible each year, in order to be responsive to changes within the profession and differences in student cohorts. A problem-based learning approach is used for all modules to enable students to apply knowledge and skills from workplace learning experiences and previous subjects, to further develop their professional reasoning abilities.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate practice, in specialised areas, as an occupational therapist working as part of a collaborative team
  • be able to demonstrate basic competency in either the occupational rehabilitation or mental health practice areas
  • be able to demonstrate professional reasoning skills in planning, implementing and evaluating occupational therapy intervention with specific case scenarios, free from racism and personal judgements
  • be able to demonstrate effective, culturally-safe and professional communication and collaboration in the context of assessment and intervention
  • be able to participate in problem-based learning meetings in a professional manner, including taking minutes, chairing a meeting and reflecting on meeting dynamics
  • be able to work collaboratively with other health discipline students to plan for culturally-safe service delivery

  • Complex professional reasoning skills focusing on five separate practice areas including: advanced psychosocial practice, aged care, child and family, advanced rehabilitation, work rehabilitation and working with healthy communities
  • Assessment, goals, interventions, and evaluation of service delivery for each area of practice
