This subject introduces the theory, practice and historical foundations of evidence-based psychotherapy with adults, with a focus on the application of cognitive-behaviour therapies for the treatment of anxiety, mood and related disorders. It links the development of individualized formulations to the planning and implementation of interventions for specific psychological disorders. Students will be introduced to specific cognitive-behavioural intervention skills and develop a critical appreciation of the effectiveness of the interventions across a number of applications.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to competently conduct cognitive-behavioural assessments of adults with anxiety, mood and related disorders;
  • be able to critically analyse and synthesize the information obtained during cognitive-behavioural assessments in order to be able to develop individualized cognitive-behavioural formulations for adults with anxiety, mood and related disorders;
  • be able to articulate treatment plans, based on individualized cognitive-behavioural formulations, that nominate appropriate targets for intervention, specifically targeting identified maintaining factors;
  • be able to demonstrate competence in the application of cognitive-behavioural interventions for anxiety, mood and related disorders; and
  • be able to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural therapies for anxiety, mood and related disorders, modifying formulations as necessary.

Residential School

This subject contains a 2.5 day Compulsory Residential School.

The residential school is intended to serve a number of functions

  • to teach therapy skills
  • to demonstrate clinical therapy skills
  • to demonstrate the application of case formulation to treatment planning and monitoring
  • to engage the students in case analysis and discussion

Activities include
