This subject is designed to introduce Australian academic culture and to enhance the level of Academic English skills of those students from Language Backgrounds Other Than English (LBOTE) entering the University. Both International and Domestic students, who may have studied English for some time, often find it challenging to write for academic purposes in the Australian academic context. This subject aims to provide students with opportunities to develop additional skills in critical thinking, listening, speaking, reading and writing necessary for tertiary studies.

  • Core academic language: Functions, meaning and grammar
  • Academic identity: Position and voice
  • Criticality: Evaluating and questioning
  • Optimising learning: Strategies and self-evaluation
  • Each topic above will be explored through activities in listening, speaking, reading and writing
