SSS070 Prep for Teaching Maths 3 (Statistics and Probability) (0)

Prep for Teaching Maths 3 (Statistics and Probability) is the third in a suite of three Studylink enabling subjects designed to address core Numeracy skills required by teachers to demonstrate the minimum standard as set by the Australian Government. All students enrolled in an initial teacher education course are required to sit and pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE). This subject covers core numeracy content in the content areas of Statistics and Probability, including non-calculator skills and working mathematically, which are areas examined in such a test.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to use statistical displays to compare sets of data, and evaluate statistical claims made in media;
  • be able to read boxplots to compare sets of data;
  • be able to calculate relative frequencies to estimate probabilities of simple and compound events;
  • be able to select and use appropriate problem solving strategies; and
  • be able to work confidently without a calculator in the content of the subject.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Interpretation of column charts, bar charts, histograms and line plots of data
  • Interpretation of mean, median and mode of data
  • Uses the range and standard deviation (defined simply as a measure of spread) to discuss the usefulness of the mean, median or mode as a representation of a set of data
  • Finds the upper and lower quartiles of a set of data
  • Uses box-and-whiskers plots and back-to-back stem-and-leaf plots to compare sets of data
  • Calculates relative frequencies to calculate probabilities of simple events
  • Uses Venn diagrams, tables or tree diagrams to calculate the probabilities of compound events
