VSC714 Advanced Clinical Research Internship (16)

The aim of this subject is to develop clinical research skills relevant to professional clinical practice. This will include development of advanced clinical knowledge relevant to clinical research questions, research methodologies, problem-solving skills and reflective skills allowing critical appraisal of existing and new research knowledge relevant to the discipline. Students will concurrently undertake veterinary clinical training while undertaking this subject allowing development of clinical research skills, methodologies and data collection and translation of generated knowledge. Candidates will develop communication skills through which clinical research knowledge and critical enquiry is communicated and disseminated to peers.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate substantial knowledge of research principles and methods to undertake systematic investigation and plan and execute original research relevant to the discipline;
  • be able to demonstrate cognitive skills to critique existing and new clinical research knowledge relevant to the professional discipline;
  • be able to demonstrate effective communication skills to explain and critique theory, methodologies, results and conclusions of existing scientific literature, and
  • be able to demonstrate intellectual independence, accountability and responsibility for personal outputs and initiative for application of knowledge and research skills.


This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Undertake placement at a veterinary enterprise which is relevant to the selected research project and chosen discipline
  • Deliver presentations of critical appraisal of literature relevant to the proposed research project and chosen discipline
  • Contribute to seminars for appraisal and integration of knowledge and research findings into the context of professional practice
  • Development of cognitive and technical skills and a body of knowledge relevant to the research project and chosen discipline

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a less than 20 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Workplace learning (WPL) will be undertaken on and/or off campus at a veterinary enterprise which is relevant to the selected discipline and research project. The duration of the WPL is limited and variable over one session, negotiated between the student and supervisors, for a maximum of 20 days. The maximum duration of WPL of 20 days is <50% of the allocated time for the 16 point subject of 280-320hrs (the subject workload hours aligns with the CSU Subject Outlines policy of 140-160 hrs/8 pts).

The purpose of the WPL is for clinical exposures to develop a body of knowledge and understanding of the clinical research skills required for the proposed research project. For research-led integration of knowledge in professional contexts, integral to the Doctoral Degree (Professional) qualification, exposure to professional workplaces is required for the training of students in the DVStud, given the inter-related nature of professional activity and clinical research (professional:research nexus). The WPL allows students to develop important cognitive skills and academic independence to think critically, evaluate existing and new knowledge and develop research skills and understanding of methodologies required for the research project for the advancement of professional practice.
