Technical report

The technical report, prepared by Roy Morgan Research, provides detailed information about the methodology used for the survey.

Executive summary

In 2025 Roy Morgan was engaged by Professor Clive Hamilton of Charles Sturt University to conduct a 15-minute online survey of expectations and behaviour changes in response to extreme weather events and climate change with an Australian sample over the age of 18 drawn from Roy Morgan’s
consumer panel.

The survey investigated Australian’s expectations for future climate change and related extreme weather events such as floods, bushfires and cyclones. The influence of these events on behaviours such as moving home or making home modifications were tested explicitly. Related attitudes were also surveyed. The survey included a focus on parental status, intentions for future children, expectations for those children’s wellbeing over the next 50 years, and how those attitudes were influenced by experience of extreme weather events. Exposure to extreme weather events was directly measured through self-reported experience of events since 2019, when the black summer bushfires impacted communities in multiple states.
