Yield Prophet

Yield Prophet generates crop simulations and reports to assist in decision-making. By matching crop inputs with potential yield in a given season, Yield Prophet subscribers may avoid over- or under-investing in their crop. The simulations provide a framework for farmers and advisors to:

- Forecast yield
- Manage climate and soil water risk
- Make informed decisions about nitrogen and irrigation applications
- Match inputs with the yield potential of their crop
- Assess the effect of changed sowing dates or varieties
- Assess the possible effects of climate change

In 2017, we are using Yield Prophet to estimate the potential yield of wheat in one trial at the Graham Centre Field Site.  The wheat variety Gregory was sown on Monday 22 May and received 12.6 kg N/ha at sowing.  If seasonal conditions warrant, the crop will be top dressed with further N.  Yield Prophet will assist us to decide on the timing and amount of N.

Yield Prophet estimates yield using actual weather data up until the present and then the historic weather data for the rest of the growing season to produce a yield probability for this year. The user gives Yield Prophet the soil test results of moisture content, nitrogen, pH and other data, the soil type, wheat variety, sowing date and rate, and depth to which the roots can grow.

We are using the Wagga Wagga AMO (Forest Hill) weather station as the nearest weather station because its records are updated daily.

Yield Prophet calculates water and nitrogen use and shows when water and nitrogen stresses occur. The user can enter the dates and rate of nitrogen application (and irrigation if appropriate) during the season.
