Evaluating canola meal as a supplement in beef cattle in southern NSW

Producers are faced with challenges of addressing the summer-autumn pasture fed gap in Southern NSW where the supply of pasture alone can sometimes be insufficient to meet the demands of growing and finishing livestock. Supplementary feeding with a protein by-product allows producers to comply and market their cattle under the Pasturefed Cattle Assurance System (PCAS). Multiple studies have shown the effects of supplementing protein meals in a partial or full mixed ration on low quality pasture, however, the effects of supplementing PCAS approved protein meals as a standalone supplement need to be further investigated.

Therefore, my study aims to investigate the potential of replacing a grain based supplement with canola meal at weaning and finishing cattle, subsequent carcase quality and the economic productivity within a grassfed production system.
