Assessment of the role of semio-chemicals in dung preference by introduced dung beetles

Using various olfactometers, the responses of selected dung beetle species to various odors will be assessed. Individuals of Onthophagus vacca, Bubas bison and other species will be exposed to different dung types, volatile compounds and dung with different moisture levels and of various qualities.

The aims of this research are to determine the chemistry behind dung attraction, pheromones involved in beetles’ reproduction or colonization and developing of suitable trapping method.
