Dr Luiz Silva

Professor Luiz Silva, on sabbatical from the Federal University of Sao Joao del-Rei (UFSJ) in Minas Gerais, Brazil, is working with ILWS colleague Dr Lee Baumgartner on fisheries research. Luiz’s research interests are in fish passage, fish mortality from hydro-turbines (hydropower), and the impacts on fish from water infrastructure in general. He is a member of the International Energy Agency Technology Collaboration Programme on Hydropower – Annex XIII: Hydropower and Fish – of which Australia and Brazil are both members.

In recent years Luiz has also focused on the development and application of non-invasive methods to sample freshwater fish, particularly adapting techniques of Remote Underwater Video (RUV) and Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV). His research applies technologies to study and, therefore, promote conservation of freshwater fish species, with a strong background on tropical systems.
