The Master of Animal Science aims to promote advanced critical reflection on professional practice in the animal industries, preparing graduates for leadership positions. The course meets the educational needs of professionals working towards the advancement of animal industries; promotes the acquisition of advanced analytical, problem solving skills and conceptual insights that enable students to assume positions of leadership within the animal industries; and encourages excellence in scholarship and/or focused research within the candidate's discipline area. The course meets the educational needs of professionals working towards the advancement of animal industries; promotes the acquisition of additional knowledge to help graduates advance in the workplace especially as preparation for a new career direction. Graduates extend their knowledge in specific disciplines relevant to their workplace or to a position that they aspire to. Skills in research and presenting data are developed. Research projects may be included in the Diploma and these help develop higher level skills in investigation and reporting.

Admission criteria

CSU Admission Policy

Master of Animal Science

For admission a candidate shall:

  1. hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor qualification with a major in a relevant discipline*; or
  2. hold an AQF Level 8 Graduate Diploma qualification in a relevant discipline*.

*Relevant disciplines include, but are not restricted to General Science; Animal or Veterinary Sciences, Agricultural Science or  Biomedical Science.

CSU Credit Policy

Master of Animal Science

To ensure the Master of Animal Science meets AQF requirements, no credit will be granted for undergraduate subjects.

Appropriately qualified (Degree is relevant discipline) professionals who have previously completed industry accredited (and assessed) professional courses (such as Dairy Australia Repro but excluding TAFE courses) may be eligible for a maximum of 16 credit points (ASC580 + ASC581).

Articulation

The Master, Graduate Diploma [Exit Point Only] and Graduate Certificate [Exit Point Only] make up an articulated set of courses and credit is given in each higher level course for the subjects completed in the lower.

Graduation requirements

Master of Animal Science

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 96 points.

Graduate Diploma of Animal Science [Exit Point Only]

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 64 points.

Graduate Certificate in Animal Science [Exit Point Only]

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 32 points.

Enrolment Pattern

The enrolment pattern is flexible, although ideally the capstone subject(s) should be completed in the final year of study. The enrolment pattern will be developed in consultation with the Course Co-ordinator. The research component may require enrolment in ASC516 (16 cp) or ASC532 (32 cp) in two consecutive sessions. It can; however, be completed within a single session by enrolling in ASC517 (16 cp) or ASC533 (32 cp).

Accreditation

Provision for accreditation of international students for the purpose of progression within their own institutes is envisaged. These institutes may be government, non-government or privately funded. The form that accreditation may take would need to be developed with each organisation and particularly with large organisations servicing the needs of specific industries. For example, postgraduate training in animal nutrition may be an in service requirement for promotion to be an Extension Officer within the dairy industry of a developing country.
