EHR421 Applied Psychology For Exercise & Activity (8)
Abstract
This subject aims to enhance student understanding of current research and practice in applied sport and exercise psychology. It introduces students to a range of psychological interventions currently being used by 'mental' coaches and sport psychologists to improve the performance, satisfaction and personal growth of athletes and exercise participants, including goal setting, relaxation and energising techniques, imagery, mental rehearsal, self-talk and concentration control. Psychological skills such as motivation, confidence, self-awareness, concentration and arousal management that are applicable to coaches, sport psychology specialists, physical educators, sport scientists, sports journalists, sports administrators, exercise leaders, coaches, athletes and exercisers, are also covered. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify the influences that selected psychological factors have on performance and personal growth in sport and exercise settings;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the process of development and implementation of an applied sport psychology program;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of a range of techniques for developing psychological/mental skills;
- be able to apply the above knowledge and techniques to develop (or discuss), a psychological skills training program that addresses the needs of a sport/ population-specific group or individual;
- be able to obtain, evaluate, synthesise and organise information;
- be able to exercise critical thinking and reflective judgement.

- Concentration and attentional control techniques;
- Imagery and mental rehearsal;
- Referral issues;
- Practical advice from an applied sport psychologist.
