Abstract

This subject examines the nature of the school environment and introduces pre-service teachers to the way in which teachers communicate in this environment. Pre-service teachers will utilize the knowledge and experience that they have gained including observation and identification of learner needs and abilities. Pre-service teachers will undertake 17 days in a school setting, 15 days of placement and 2 introductory days to observe, evaluate, devise, and utilize a range of teaching strategies and resources
that benefit school children.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

have knowledge of key research literature in teaching practice;
have knowledge of key research literature in to student learning;
develop a range of questioning skills;
develop skills in emotional response and value clarification;
develop skills in verbal and non-verbal communication;
develop an awareness of current models of teaching in schools with a view to developing their own teaching style;
engage in critical enquiry and dialogue with a range of educational professionals such as subject coordinator, university liaison officer and associate teacher;
demonstrate knowledge of the Professional Teaching Standards;
complete the required number of days in a school setting.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:

Teaching and Learning Theories;
value clarification skills;
verbal and non-verbal communication;
fifteen days of placement in a school setting;
two days of observations in a school setting;
participate in teaching sessions and reflect on those sessions;
role of reflective practice in teaching and learning;
Professional Teaching Standards.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 15 to 17 days duration. This subject will involve 17 days in a school setting, 15 days of placement and 2 introductory days.
