ISL564 Applied Arabic 2: Arabic Literature (16)


This subject builds on ISL469 while addressing at a more advanced level the theoretical coverage of Arabic Grammar. Adverbs, adjective patterns and other finer aspects of Arabic grammar are dealt with and variations of grammar in Arabic poetry are introduced. Students at this stage will be able to summarise Arabic passages and present them in Arabic. Writing, reading, speaking and comprehension practice is included to build further competence in Arabic language.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to demonstrate a knowledge of types of apposition, triptote and diptote
  • be able to demonstrate competency in Apposition (Al badal)
  • be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of the forms and rules of Arabic poetry
  • be able to read and understand Arabic newspapers at an intermediate level
  • be able to demonstrate competency in using different emphatic forms

  • Listening to selected passages
  • Al-lazim and al-muta'addee
  • Transitive and intransitive verbs
  • Deputy doer and verb conjugation for the unknown doer
  • Metonymy
  • Prohibited words from inflection
