Abstract
This subject offers advanced theoretical and applied learning in preparation of news material for digital publication. Within three modules, news language and construction, social media and data research and publishing and media law, the subject develops high-level analytical competencies in grammar, story structure, social media and data research and visualisation, headline and caption writing, defamation and contempt of court. The subject is offered via 11 weeks distance education with a one week face to face intensive (residential) workshop. |

Enrolment restrictions
Students should either be enrolled in a Bachelor of Communication program or be nominated by Fairfax Regional Media to enrol for Single Subject Study. The subject will also be available to others as Single Subject Study. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- have a theoretically informed understanding of digital publishing in the contemproary news environment
- be able to apply advanced editing techniques to copy
- understand and apply concepts relating to story structure
- understand and apply data research and visualisation techniques
- understand and apply key principles in headline and picture caption writing
- understand theory of social and new media in news publishing and use techniques for research and publication
- understand and apply media law in relation to contempt of court
- understand and apply media law in relation to defamation

|
Residential SchoolThis subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school.
A one week intensive (residential) is held in the final week of the subject offering at the Bathurst campus of Charles Sturt University. The intensive will give students the opportunity to revise materials and further develop competencies in a tutorial-style program that emphasises student/teaching staff interaction and guidance. The major assessment for the subject, an in-class test, will be held during the intensive.
