This subject introduces the basics of professional writing for the communication and creative industries. Through the application of theory and practice, students gain a solid understanding of genre, style and narrative form in professional and creative communication contexts. This will enable students to meet the expectations concerning writing of future employers.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to write at a level that meets professional expectations with respect to grammar, spelling, sentence construction, accuracy and clarity;
  • Be able to write effectively across a range of genres;
  • Be able to write competently in a range of registers, from formal to informal;
  • Be able to identify what constitutes good writing in (and outside of) their professional fields; and
  • Be able to apply good writing principles to their professional work.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • A framework for understanding how written language works in professional and creative contexts
  • Grammar, sentence construction, spelling and punctuation at a professional level
  • Genre, register and narrative in professional writing
  • Drafting and editing skills
  • Critical self-reflection pertaining to writing
