EML517 English as a Global Language (8)

This subject investigates the nature of English as a global language. It explores the history of the rise of English to become a global language, and the variety of Englishes used around the world.  A range of beliefs and theories about English as a global language is considered to enable participants to engage with the benefits and issues of the spread of English globally. Participants will be encouraged to use and share their own experiences of learning English as an additional language to understand the place and role of English in a range of international contexts.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Describe the development of English as a global language including the influences of colonisation, education and globalisation;
  • Describe and evaluate global Englishes and their features;
  • Synthesise and critically evaluate a range of perspectives about English as a global language;
  • Investigate and articulate the impact of English in specific contexts considering social, political, linguistic, and cultural aspects;
  • Critically reflect on the benefits and issues related to English as a global language.

  • Globalisation, colonisation and the spread of English
  • The range of Englishes in the world today
  • English as a lingua franca and translingualism
  • The cultural, language, social, political and economic impacts of English in international contexts
  • Learning and using English in a globalised environment
  • The future of English as a global language - benefits and issues
