EPT509 High Level Facilitation Skills in Adult and Vocational Education (8)

This subject encourages learners to develop their understanding of learning through facilitation. It introduces the learners to ways of observing, reflecting upon and analysing learning in various workplace contexts. This subject is a practicum subject but with a difference: the objective of the practicum is to investigate learning environments characterised by high performance facilitation and to use the ideas collected through observation, interview and other investigative techniques to reflect on ways in which you could improve on your own practice as a facilitator of learning.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Critically analyse situations where vocationally based training is being delivered in innovative and/or flexible ways;
  • Critically analyse innovative and/or flexible delivery solutions in so far as:
  • the planning, implementation and evaluation of facilitation methods;
  • the strategies used to accommodate needs of different individuals, groups of learners and teaching situations;
  • the use of effective communication using a variety of techniques;
  • the adaptation of teaching methods to suit nonclassroom contexts or specific groups of learners;
  • the factors that impact on learners in terms of the social and economic/political context;
  • Critically analyse areas for innovation within their own training context in relation to current literature; and
  • Develop an innovative program which implements the ideas encountered in their investigations and incorporates current research, literature and policy.


This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Experience as a facilitator in the adult and vocational education system
  • High level facilitation
  • Innovative and flexible delivery
  • Developing high level facilitation skills
  • PRACTICUM REQUIREMENTS - 50 hours consisting of:
  • investigation of high level facilitation in adult and vocational education delivery in one or more settings, and the critical reflection of findings within the context of current research literature.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 7 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

There are 50 hours of practicum investigating high level facilitation in Adult and Vocational Education delivery through interview, observation and reflection.
