In this subject the management of the major forms of soil degradation (erosion, acidity, salinity, nutrient decline deterioration of soil structure and pollution) is evaluated. Principles of soil conservation, total catchment management and land management policies are developed.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the major causes of soil degradation and their management
  • be able to evaluate the quality, and implications, of scientific information relating to soil management issues
  • be able to formulate and test hypotheses relating to soil management issues
  • to able to create and justify management options to conserve or improve the soil resource


This subject will cover the following topics:

(a) defining soil degradation problems
(b) understand the problems: causes and management
(i) structural decline,
(ii) extremes of pH,
(iii) salinity,
(iv) nutrient decline,
(v) erosion, and
(vi) pollution
(b) principles of soil conservation;
(c) principles of soil conservation;
(d) total catchment and land management policy
