This subject aims to develop knowledge and understanding in two areas of clinical Medical Imaging selected by the student. Students will undertake a review of the literature in topics covering medical imaging protocols and/or equipment in order to develop detailed understanding and practical applications of the selected topics.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • (selecting two of the four listed topics below), students should be able to:
  • Topic 1: Screening mammography
  • determine the efficacy of breast cancer screening;
  • identify and assess the factors that contribute to the efficacy of breast cancer screening.
  • Topic 2: Duplex and colour flow Doppler ultrasound
  • explain the logical use of either spectral of colour Doppler scan controls in the optimal and relevant acquirement of clinical information;
  • explain the current usage of Doppler ultrasound in a selected general area of your choice.
  • Topic 3: Medical imaging in multiple trauma
  • explain the theoretical and practical requirements of multiple trauma patient management;
  • understand and apply the practical examination protocols and projections to multiple trauma;
  • describe the practical radiographic problems associated with multiple trauma examinations.
  • Topic 4: Contrast agents
  • understand contrast agents in the following areas:
  • historical development
  • desirable properties
  • comparative advantages and limitations
  • undesirable side effects and associated treatments
  • classification and associated applications
  • describe in depth one specific aspect of contrast agents selected for your written assignment

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

Students choose two of the following four topics. The pair of topics studied is dependent upon the student's previous educational background and the course in which enrolled (eg on shore, Singapore, Malaysia etc). In some cases, students may be directed to take a specific topic(s) and in other cases may be restricted from undertaking a certain topic(s). Some students may be given a free choice. Where there is a choice to be made by the student, then that choice must be notified to the Subject Coordinator (in writing) prior to the dispatch of mail packages by the University.
