REC210 Outdoor Recreation Field Skills 3 (8)

In this subject students develop the knowledge and skills required to lead and manage groups of people in outdoor recreation activities. Effective leadership and communication skills are developed in real-life settings. Students are taught the importance of minimising the impact of outdoor recreation activities on the natural environment. Specialised training in various outdoor recreation activities will be an intrinsic part of the subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to lead groups in short-duration outdoor recreation activities
  • be able to contribute leadership in advanced level, long-duration outdoor recreation activities
  • be able to minimise the effects on the environment of outdoor recreation activities
  • be able to give clear instruction whilst leading groups
  • be able to manage first aid response in remote and/or isolated areas

  • Leadership and facilitation
  • Group dynamics, conflict resolution and effective communication
  • Environmental impact of outdoor recreation
  • First aid and emergency response
