BMS165 Human Anatomy and Physiology for Nurses 1 (8)

This subject introduces essential concepts of chemistry, human anatomy and physiology as students begin to construct the knowledge required for understanding and implementing safe nursing practice. The subject focuses on the chemistry, anatomy and physiology of the nervous, vascular, haematological, lymphatic, pulmonary, and immune systems beginning from the cellular level then progressing through tissues to body systems. This knowledge is then applied to essential concepts such as maintaining homeostasis and interruptions to homeostasis such as inflammation, infection and pain.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the structure and function of biological molecules, cells and tissues;
  • be able to define the concept of homeostasis and explain the role of homeostasis in normal body functions;
  • be able to identify principles and applications of mechanical force, heat, electricity and radiation to health care;
  • be able to describe common disease-causing microorganisms and their classification;
  • be able to describe the routes of transmission of microorganisms and the methods used to control spread of infection; and
  • be able to identify and describe specific organs systems (nervous, cardiovascular, haematological, lymphatic, pulmonary and immune) and explain the relationship between their structure and function.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • MODULE 1: Essential concepts of human anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology;
  • MODULE 2: Molecules, cells, tissues and Homeostasis;
  • MODULE 3: Microbiology and infection;
  • MODULE 4: Anatomy and physiology of the immune system;
  • MODULE 5: Anatomy and physiology of the nervous system;

Residential School

This subject contains a 3 day Compulsory Residential School.

The residential school is for distance/online students only.  The purpose of the residential school is to provide hands-on learning experiences, including laboratory sessions for complex anatomy and physiology concepts. Experience has shown that there is no effective substitute for hands on experiences to enable proper understanding of this content.

Special Resources

Students attending compulsory residential schools on CSU campuses will incur costs associated with travel, accommodation and required resources.

The information contained in the CSU Handbook was accurate at the date of publication: June 2022. The University reserves the right to vary the information at any time without notice.
