As healthcare expands and becomes more complex, the role of medical laboratories equally expands in terms of the services and products they offer. There is a growing expectation for quality service and product from consumers who are the patients, other healthcare units and staff as well as other laboratories. In a global environment, healthcare attracts staff from various cultures and serves people from varied backgrounds. Further, healthcare needs to be sensitive and respectufl of the cultures of the First Nation peoples. It is therefore important that in learning the provision of service and product, the learner develops skills and understands management principles as these drive quality of service and product.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to analyse the role of professional, licensing and accreditation bodies in medical diagnostic or medical research labs, such as National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA), National Pathology Accreditation Authority (NPAAC) and Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS);
  • be able to describe and justify the use of professional ethics;
  • be able to analyse the concepts of communication, motivation management and leadership within the laboratory setting;
  • be able to describe and analyse the healthcare system including funding models;
  • be able to analyse and develop solutions to various aspects of Work, Heath and Safety (WHS);
  • be able to evaluate quality and quality control within the laboratory and services offered; and
  • be able to evaluate and apply principles of cultural competence in relation to Australian First Nations peoples and various other cultures in the medical science laboratory with respect to patients, patient samples and staff.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Professionalism, workforce and ethics;
  • Communication;
  • Management of resources;
  • Management and leadership;
  • Work health and safety;
  • Quality in products and services, accreditation, certification, licensure; and
  • Australian First Nations cultures in relation to healthcare and work.
