CLS404 Essentials of Paramedicine: Cardiology (8)

This subject provides students with the theoretical knowledge and understanding of cardiac conditions applicable to paramedics in an out of hospital environment. The subject reviews cardiac anatomy, physiology and pharmacology as appropriate for the level of graduate entry into paramedicine. Emphasis is placed on obtaining a high level of understanding of the pathophysiology of cardiac conditions including managing acute coronary syndromes and cardiac arrest in the out of hospital setting. Evidence based theories of cardiac management strategies will be used to develop students' skills in leadership and management of cardiac patients.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to manage cardiac care in the out of hospital environment based on a specialised knowledge of the pathophysiology and aetiology (characteristics and consequences) of acute cardiovascular emergencies;
  • be able to critically analyse the current management guidelines of cardiovascular emergencies and develop evidence based treatment plans relevant to paramedicine;
  • be able to critically evaluate complex data from patient and technologically-derived sources (e.g. point of care) to inform decision making about the clinical care of acute cardiovascular emergencies in the out of hospital environment;
  • be able to demonstrate safe and competent management for cardiac arrests of non-traumatic origin in accordance with evidence based practice and current guidelines; and
  • be able to demonstrate autonomy, judgement, accountability and leadership in the management of out of hospital cardiac clinical care.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Patient assessment techniques - This subject will focus upon the physical assessment of a patient who has a cardiac complaint. A cardiovascular assessment therefore will be taught with relevance to paramedicine.
  • The identification, differential diagnosis, treatment and management of cardiovascular conditions will include syncope, cardiogenic shock, pericarditis, cardiomyopathy, acute coronary syndromes (ACS), cardiac arrest, tachycardia and bradycardia management.
  • Electrocardiology and its interpretation will be a primary component. This will cover both simple and complex 12 lead interpretation. The transmission of the ECG and use of thrombolytics in the management of ACS will be taught and reviewed in reference to paramedicine.
  • Essential skills in leadership, cultural sensitivity, scene management and crew resource management will be taught and reviewed in reference to paramedicine.
