NRS570 Strengthening Primary Health Care with Rural Communities (8)

Students will explore contemporary perspectives of Primary Health Care as a whole of society approach to health. This subject provides students with the opportunity to examine and critique delivery of Primary Health Care services in the context in which they live and practice, with an emphasis on regional, rural and remote communities. Students will explore the importance of working and consulting with communities and other key service providers to support optimal health and outcomes, with a focus on respectful engagement and consultation with First Nations and other marginalised populations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to critically evaluate the importance of global, national and regional policies and perspectives of Primary Health Care reforms for enabling healthy rural communities;
  • be able to identify and critique the delivery of Primary Health Care services in the context in which they live and practice;
  • be able to identify and present contemporary research evaluating the delivery and sustainability of primary health care services in regional, rural and remote communities;
  • be able to critique current primary health care practice focused on illness prevention, health promotion and health education for regional, rural and remote communities and populations; and
  • be able to engage and consult respectfully with First Nations, migrant/refugee, and marginalised populations to support optimal health.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • MODULE 1: Contemporary perspectives of Primary Health Care Service Delivery;
  • MODULE 2: Models of Primary Health Care delivery;
  • MODULE 3: Principles underpinning effective delivery of Primary Health Care Services; and
  • MODULE 4: Community consultation, co-design and intersectoral collaboration.
