RES703 Comprehensive Literature Review (16)

This subject will progress and sharpen both the practical strategies necessary for the successful construction of a literature review, and the content knowledge relevant to the proposed research. Students will become thoroughly conversant with the literature of their intended area of study and understand the major processes, techniques, issues, problems and knowledge within their field of research that will enable them to complete a major draft literature review for their doctoral thesis.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify and analyse existing sources of information that relate to the chosen research problem;
  • be able to demonstrate intellectual independence to think critically, and in relation to the research problem evaluate existing knowledge and ideas, reflect on theory and practice and thereby make an original contribution to their field of research;
  • be able to plan and execute a framework which demonstrates knowledge of the processes and methods for a critical exploration of the literature pertaining to their research; and
  • be able to communicate effectively the theoretical justifications for the research in a draft of a literature review chapter for their doctoral thesis.
