VPA107 Fundamentals of Visual Culture (8)

This subject introduces students to visual signs and how they convey meaning. The relationship between sender and receiver, the combination of word and image, and visual narrative structures are explored through examining conventions and codes in visual culture. The psychology of perception, types and uses of images, and their social function and effects are considered throughout. This subject provides an introduction to creative and performing arts framed by societal, technological and practical contexts of visual culture.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to analyse the structure and content of diverse forms of visual communication;
  • be able to explain fundamental visual communication theories; and
  • be able to discuss the underlying factors that have shaped changing conventions and developments in creative and performing arts.

  • Fundamental principles of narrative
  • Introduction to the moving image
  • Narrative and emerging technologies
  • Introduction to theatre and live performance
  • Design process - concept, research, content and iteration
  • Colour theory - additive and subtractive colour systems and contextual applications
  • The meaning of images: form and structure
  • Introduction to Semiotics: signs, symbols and metaphors
  • Postmodernism in visual culture
  • Gestalt principles of visual communication
