EHR519 Exercise Prescription for Cardiopulmonary Conditions (8)

Abstract

Cardiopulmonary diseases are responsible for about 40% of all deaths and 30% of total disease burden in Australia and are the most costly in terms of health care system expenditure. This subject uses online lectures, case study tutorials, group work activities, practical residential school workshops and other strategies to develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies required by graduate Exercise Physiologists to work safely and effectively with clients with cardiopulmonary conditions. Emphasis is placed on developing knowledge and comprehension of cardiopulmonary pathophysiology, including aetiology and risk factors, diagnostic procedures, treatments and applications for exercise prescription for the management of targeted cardiopulmonary conditions. After completing this subject, students will be able to: conduct effective initial consultations; design and delivery safe and effective exercise assessments and lifestyle interventions; evaluate physical fitness; and improve health and wellbeing of client's with chronic and complex cardiopulmonary conditions.

Enrolment restrictions

Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology students or as approved by the Course Director.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain the pathophysiology of cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions as it relates to exercise physiology;
  • be able to outline the risk factors, complications and co-morbidities that must be accounted for when applying exercise interventions to individuals with cardiopulmonary conditions;
  • be able to describe the effects of commonly prescribed medications on acute and chronic exercise responses that must be accounted for when applying exercise interventions to individuals with cardiopulmonary conditions;
  • be able to explain the diagnostic techniques and treatment procedures used in the treatment of cardiopulmonary conditions;
  • be able to demonstrate the ability to conduct exercise/fitness/functional tests on individuals with cardiopulmonary conditions;
  • be able to prescribe exercise as a therapeutic modality for individuals with cardiopulmonary conditions.

  • Clinical cardiovascular physiology and disease pathology
  • Electrocardiography 1 - Basics
  • Electrocardiography 2 - Arrhythmias
  • Non-surgical clinical cardiovascular procedures
  • Surgical cardiovascular clinical procedures
  • ECG and clinical exercise testing
  • Medications for cardiovascular conditions
  • Cardiovascular overview and case studies
  • Clinical pulmonary physiology and disease pathology
  • Spirometry and other non-surgical procedures
  • Medications for pulmonary conditions
  • Pulmonary overview and case studies

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school. Distance Education students are required to attend a three (3) day COMPULSORY Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period.  This Residential School is necessary in order to develop practical skills to comply with accreditation requirements.

Specialised Resources

Distance Education students are required to attend a Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period to access laboratory facilities. This will require students to arrange and finance their own travel and accommodation.
