EHR527 Clinical Workplace Learning & Professionalism - Part-Time (32)

Clinical workplace learning plays an essential role in preparing Exercise Physiology students to enter the workforce by providing them with opportunities to integrate and apply theory in real workplace settings whilst being supported by experienced practitioners. This subject involves 360-500 hours of structured clinical workplace learning designed to meet the requirements for accreditation in Exercise Physiology with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA). During placement, students will observe and collaborate with appropriately qualified supervisors to refine their knowledge and skills across all aspects of clinical practice within a safe and supportive environment that promotes critical self-reflection and continuous improvement. Students will also complete coursework to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to professionalism, client-centred care, reflective practice, multidisciplinary team care, Medicare compliance, rural and remote practice, legalities of clinical practice, practitioner self-care and will also identify opportunities for professional development post-graduation. By completing this capstone subject, students will have demonstrated the practitioner and professional competencies required for employment as graduate Exercise Physiologists through satisfactory performance evaluations during placement and passing an Objective Structured Clinical Examination during a residential school.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to articulate a schema for professional practice as a graduate Exercise Physiologist;
  • be able to document activities completed during a minimum of 360 hours of clinical placement as required for ESSA accreditation in Exercise Physiology using relevant logbooks;
  • be able to demonstrate competence in performing core work-related tasks relevant to clinical practice as a graduate Exercise Physiologist;
  • be able to critically reflect on own and others professional practice and self-care needs as a graduate Exercise Physiologist;
  • be able to develop an action plan that addresses continuing professional development needs as a graduate Exercise Physiologist;
  • be able to demonstrate a capacity to work as an independent graduate Exercise Physiologist and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

  • 360-500 hours of workplace learning under the supervision of experienced exercise and/or health care professionals.
Workplace Learning
This subject contains a 77 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Course accreditation requirements mandate that students complete 500 hours of Workplace Learning in clinical exercise physiology settings.  This includes 140 hours with clients with low risk of developing exercise-induced complications and 360 clinical hours with persons with chronic conditions.

Upon admission, students will be granted exemption for any ESSA approved practicum that has been completed with clients with low risk of developing exercise-induced complications.  Such students will only be required to complete the balance of hours necessary to obtain the 500 hour total as specified above.

The duration of workplace learning of 77 days is a maximum assuming a 6.5 hour working day.

Residential School
This subject contains a 3 day Compulsory Residential School.

Distance Education students are required to attend a three (3) day COMPULSORY Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period. This Residential School is necessary in order to perform practical skills assessment to comply with accreditation requirements.

Special Resources

Distance Education students are required to attend a Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period to access laboratory facilities. This will require students to arrange and finance their own travel and accommodation.
