INF404 Foundations for Information Studies (8)

This subject will provide students with the contextual, professional, scholarly and technological foundations of the body of knowledge underpinning the information disciplines and professions. Professional information settings including libraries, archives, records repositories and other information centres and organizations will be discussed. An introduction to information scholarship and research and current issues in library and information studies practice will follow. The subject will orient students to the MIS program and enable them to develop and refine their individual educational and professional objectives.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate their understanding of the information professions, information users, and the discipline and fields comprising library and information studies;
  • be able to investigate and critically analyse libraries and information agencies in their historical, social, cultural, economic, and political contexts;
  • be able to identify and explain ethical, legal and policy issues relevant to the information sector;
  • be able to understand basic IT terminology related to the information studies field and the roles of IT in enabling the management of information;
  • be able to compare and contrast how libraries and information agencies fit into constantly evolving information technology and infrastructure contexts;
  • be able to demonstrate comprehension of the diversity of library and information scholarship, including the professional and theoretical discourse of library and information studies; and
  • be able to identify, evaluate and communicate about developments arising from major issues, questions and trends that define the information fields.
