BMS172 Functional Anatomy of the Vertebral Column, Pelvic Girdle and Lower Limb (8)

Abstract

This subject provides students with a comprehensive overview of the functional anatomy of the vertebral column, pelvic girdle, pelvic floor, and lower limbs. Topics covered include limb motion related to joint structure and mobility, relevant aspects of surface anatomy, and the anatomical relationships between bones, muscles, blood vessels, and nerves in these body regions. Students undertaking this subject will be assumed to have a basic understanding of anatomical terminology, the general organisation of the body as a whole, and have an introductory level knowledge of the gross anatomy of the musculoskeletal system.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Be able to:

Explain the anatomical basis of relevant practical diagnostic procedures and treatments commonly performed by health professionals;
Identify and interpret surface features of the normal living body;
Identify and interpret key features of radiological images;
Describe the relationship between key surface features of the lower limb and limb motion;
Describe the normal anatomical variation between individuals due to age, gender and body build;
Describe the the effects of posture, respiratory phase and pregnancy on anatomical structure;
Describe the anatomy of the vertebral column;
Describe the anatomy of the pelvic floor;
Describe the anatomical relationship of bones, muscles, blood vessels, and nerves of the pelvic girdle;
Describe the anatomical relationship of bones, muscles, blood vessels, and nerves of the lower limb;
Describe the relationship between lower limb motion and joint mobility;
Describe how the integumentary system, fascia, muscle and bone can protect underlying structures in the body.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:

Spine arthrology
Spinal muscles and their innervation
Pelvic floor structure and function
Arthrology of the lower limb, including pelvis, hip, knee, ankle and foot
Lower limb muscles
Lower limb blood vessels
Lower limb neurology

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.

The residential school will cover the practical aspects of the study of human functional anatomy, and will enable students access to a range of key learning tools including models, digital programs, DVDs and videos, and human cadaveric prosections.
