EEL104 History and Philosophy of Australian Education (8)

Abstract

In this subject, students will critically review the development of education in Australia, and compare the timelines of development across early childhood and primary school settings, considering the connections between broad social history and education history. The impact of early childhood philosophers on the shape of Australian education will be examined. Connections with international perspectives of early childhood will be considered.Students will examine current local and international curriculum frameworks that inform both early childhood and primary education and critique their content and purposes. By considering one group of Australian families, students will evaluate the impacts of such frameworks.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the way Australian education has developed in the context of social history and activity;
  • be able to define their personal perspective on the influence of education history and the curriculum frameworks that inform Australaian educatoin, on current education;
  • analyse the impact of context on the role of the Australian educator and compose a role statement;
  • define the role of curriculum frameworks in informing and guiding the development of educational programs in both early childhood and sschool settings;
  • be able to explain why some groups in Australian society may not have equitable access to education;
  • have an understanding of the early and current philosophies that have informed the development of early childhood education, both internationally and then in the context of AUstralian development.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • The philosophies of early childhood education
  • The development of childhood education in Australia
  • Care for children in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s
  • The current early childhood environment - political impacts, regulations, family needs, including current philosophies and approaches.
