EEP400 Indigenous Education Studies (8)
Abstract| Students will be introduced to appropriate curriculum and pedagogy for teaching Indigenous children and demonstrate how Indigenous teaching and learning practices can be of benefit to all education participants. Students will gain knowledge and appreciation of the importance and implications of full consultation with local Indigenous communities within these settings. It will focus on empowering students to effectively reflect on all aspects of teaching with respect to Indigenous perspectives. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:

2.have developed an awareness and understanding of culturally appropriate pedagogy for Indigenous children;
3.be able to formulate culturally appropriate teaching strategies for Indigenous children;
4.be able to connect with Indigenous families and communities and involve them in educational environments;
5.understand and develop aspects of a culturally safe education environment.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
Module 1: Indigenous education issues
1. What aspects are included in definitions of Aboriginal Education?
2. Contemporary Aboriginal Education issues.
3. Education policies, strategies and reviews that are influencing Aboriginal Education in the context of modern Australian society.
4. Aboriginal literacy and English
Module 2: Teaching & Learning
1. Appropriate curriculum strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
2. Appropriate pedagogical practices for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
3. Strategies to identify implement and evaluate appropriate resources when developing and utilising Aboriginal Perspectives and Aboriginal Studies.
4. Definitions and applications of Aboriginal Studies and Aboriginal Perspectives across key learning areas, within a variety of educational settings.
5. Classroom management
Module 3: Community partnerships & advocacy
1. Local Aboriginal community partnerships and their role in Aboriginal Education.
2. Connecting with Indigenous families and communities and involving them in educational environments
