EMH450 Social Studies (8)

Abstract

In this subject, students will engage in and critically reflect upon the teaching of social studies in the elementary classroom. It requires students to become familiar with the Ontario Curriculum for Social Studies, Grades 1-6, and to integrate this curriculum across other subjects. Students develop an understanding of the key social studies thinking concepts which include a strong emphasis on understanding community, history, geography, citizenship, equity and social justice within an increasingly diverse and interdependent global society. Students consider the way children construct understanding in Social Studies and consequently how they may be assessed, taught and supported through culturally relevant, responsive pedagogies.
