EPT330 Professional Knowledge & Practice Teaching (8)

Abstract

Preservice teachers will participate in a thirty-five (35) day professional experience. During this placement preservice teachers will be provided with 15 days of professional experience in a primary school setting, and 20 days in a secondary school setting. Preservice teachers will, in collaboration with their associate teachers, plan, teach and assess a variety of curriculum areas as appropriate. This experience will provide preservice teachers with an opportunity to reflect on the work of primary and secondary school educators. This experience will contribute to the students’ professional development as a teacher.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • participate in a professional experience placement outside the local area to the University campus;
  • display awareness of current models of teaching and learning for a range of learners across a range of stages;
  • reflect on teaching practices to identify implications for improving teaching and learning;
  • engage in critical enquiry and dialogue about curriculum and teaching practices;
  • utilise models drawn from primary and secondary curriculum frameworks for lesson planning;
  • work with peers on a group project;
  • use information and communication technology to enhance student learning;
  • where possible, demonstrate effective teaching and learning strategies for teaching second language learners in the context of the mainstream classroom and the range of key learning areas;
  • where possible, engage with parents and care givers including Aboriginal families and communities and parents of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • review personal and professional attributes required of quality teachers;
  • critical self-reflection and ongoing professional development.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 35 days duration. This subject will involve 35 days in a school setting, 15 days in a Kindergarten or Year 1 or Year 2 classroom and 20 days in a secondary school or as determined by accreditation requirements.
