EPT422 Professional Experience 4: Birth to 2 Years (6)

Abstract

This subject offers students an opportunity to observe, plan, implement and reflect upon experiences for infants and toddlers. Students will consult with families and other primary caregivers to address individual capacities of infants and toddlers in group settings and respond positively to family and community cultures in caregiving and education practices. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the implementation of quality environments and leadership in the healthy development of very young children. Students have the opportunity to specialise in studies of Australian Indigenous education in this subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Demonstrate competence in a range of pedagogical, social and administrative skills commensurate with the professional experience setting and the students stage in the course.
- Demonstrate skills in planning, implementing, documenting and evaluating experiences for very young children in the context of baby and toddler group care and education.
- Be able to justify and reflect upon their pedagogical decisions in light of their understanding of quality baby and toddler environments, diverse learners, rural contexts and leadership.
- Demonstrate an understanding of caregiving as curriculum.
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal engagement with professional stakeholders including child care staff, parents, families and the community.
- Demonstrate the capacity to abide by the regulations and quality assurance systems that apply to settings for very young children.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- 20 days of professional experience in a birth to two year setting. - Review personal and professional attributes required of quality teachers. - Negotiation and communication skills. - Programming for babies and toddlers. - Role of critical reflection in improving teaching and learning. - Assessing and documenting baby and toddler learning.
