FPS300 Foundations of Paramedical Science 4 (16)

Abstract

In this subject students will be able to integrate pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a problem definition and implement a treatment plan for the patient with infectious and communicable diseases; allergies, anaphylaxis and immune system responses; gastrointestinal; endocrine; haematological and cardiovascular disease; and non-traumatic neurological emergencies. Students will also investigate the pathophysiology and Prehospital care management of patients with environmentally induced or exacerbated medical conditions, as well as patients with burns; soft tissue; musculoskeletal; head; facial; spinal; thoracic and/or abdominal trauma.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to:
Demonstrate an appropriate level of knowledge of the physiology that underpins altered health states, acute health states and acute trauma states in the prehospital care setting that pertain to: cardiovascular conditions, neurological conditions, gastrointestinal conditions, environmental conditions, toxicology, soft tissue injury, head trauma, facial trauma, spinal trauma, thoracic trauma, musculoskeletal trauma and abdominal trauma.

Demonstrate correlations between clinical manifestations and the management of altered health states, acute health emergencies and acute trauma states in the prehospital care environment that pertain to the above conditions/states.

Demonstrate correct application of a prehospital care plan to create an appropriate plan of response to a prehospital care health emergency or trauma situation.

Apply the use of reflective and critical thinking to identify opportunities for improvement in clinical reasoning or patient care skills in the prehospital care setting.

Demonstrate an ability to utilise practical, valid and reliable research to support and enhance learning, and to show evidence of an appreciation for best practice in the prehospital care environment.

Demonstrate competence in medication calculations to industry standards using recognised formula.
