INF118 Professional Study Visit (2)
Abstract| By giving students first hand experience of the variety of libraries and other information agencies through at least twenty hours of structured and supervised visits, this subject seeks to acquaint students with the diversity of institutions and approaches to be found within the library and information profession and to allow them to observe in operation concepts and practices of study in other subjects. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- have a better understanding of the operation of a range of libraries and other information agencies and how these interact with their users;
- have been introduced to a range and variety of libraries and information agencies and the services they offer;
- have been introduced to the techniques used in order to ascertain services provided by various agencies to their community and users;
- have gained experience in gathering and synthesising information about libraries and other information agencies; and
- have explored the relationships that exist between various information supplying agencies. |

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
In the case of the libraries and information agencies visited, the actual topics will be determined through negotiation with the host agencies themselves and may depend upon their ability to share information with students. The University's aim is that students will have a range of discussions and demonstrations covering the following topics:
- Materials - if emphasis is placed on any particular resource/s why this is the case, etc;
- Organisation, processing and preservation of materials;
- Information services, especially design and delivery;
- Administrative and management aspects of the library or information agency;
- Utilisation of physical area and the problems faced by libraries and information agencies in this regard;
- Use of information technology; and
- Special features of specific libraries and information agencies visited. |
