Abstract|
This subject builds on the intensive and in-depth review of the research topic within the area of Information Technology that students commenced in ITC536. The subject requires students to become exceptionally familiar with the major research issues to be addressed when designing the research methodology for a research study closely related to the study in which they wish to carry out for their dissertation. The subject expects students to thoroughly understand the strengths and weaknesses of the methodologies by which knowledge in the field has been acquired. In addition, this subject focuses on the research ethics relevant to the field of research and the development of a research proposal that will serve as the basis for the dissertation. Assumed knowledge for this subject is equivalent to that covered in ITC535. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* be able to demonstrate a detailed and critical understanding of the research process and the issues to be addressed when designing the research method for the chosen topic of study;
* be able to analyse and synthesise academic literature with regards to the research methods and techniques used to acquire knowledge within the field of research;
* be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the research problem in the particular area chosen for the dissertation;
* be able to justify the overall research approach, research methodology and specific research design that are likely to be productive in addressing the research problem;
* be able to complete a research proposal and ethics approval for submitting to the University. |

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
The syllabus content for this subject will, in part, be determined by the choice of both the area of Information Technology and the selection of the topic within that area.
Students, however, will be required to produce three assignments. The first will be a critical examination of the use of different research methods employed by researchers in the field of research. The second will be presented in the form of the Research Methods chapter of the dissertation. The third will be the preparation of a formal research proposal that will form the basis of the dissertation, together with the ethics approval form. The proposal will incorporate a modified annotated bibliography based on the literature review conducted for ITC536 and cover proposed methodologies and proposed structure of the dissertation. It should emphasise expected problems in addressing the research question and the proposed solution to these problems. The research proposal will be presented by the student at a School seminar or a Faculty event. |
