Abstract|
This subject focuses on the sophisticated skills required of journalists. Students undertake both Print and Broadcast modules where they develop writing styles, examine the contextualisation of stories, and develop techniques for story packaging. The subject examines critical perspectives on the selection, production, and presentation of news and develops critical awareness of audiences with a view to story framing. Media law and multicultural and international perspectives in journalism are also examined. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an ability to apply a range of sophisticated writing and production techniques to journalism including in the form of news, feature, investigative and current affairs stories and packages;
- be able to demonstrate an ability to appreciate decisions with respect to editorial selection, story framing, and packaging including such issues as media law and ethical practice;
- be able to demonstrate skills in editing, sub-editing, and production;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of current affairs both nationally and internationally and of their recent historical sources;
- be able to analyse and discuss key trends in the media industry. |

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
Students will undertake both Print and Broadcast modules in this subject and, within each module, the syllabus will be applied to the specific demands of those respective fields of journalism.
For all students, the subject will cover:
- news, feature, current affairs and investigative reporting skills and techniques;
- production processes from the conceptualisation and commissioning of stories through to their researching and presentation;
- advanced writing and sub-editing skills;
- story framing and story angles;
- interviewing techniques;
- international and inter-cultural perspectives on news selection and presentation;
- an understanding of the context of contemporary coverage including its historical sources;
- information packaging;
- media law and basic ethical practice. |
