Abstract

This subject examines the conception, planning and conduct of research in journalism. It examines critical perspectives on the selection, production, presentation and distribution of news and information. Students are exposed to a variety of research methods which relate directly to contemporary journalism practice and the wider media industry.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of major journalism research methodologies
- be able to demonstrate an ability to critically evaluate research practices employed by professional journalists
- be able to demonstrate the use of research techniques that can be applied to contemporary print, broadcast and online journalism.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- approaching research tasks for journalists - introduction to quantitative and qualitative research techniques - interviewing as a primary research tool - current issues and ethics in news coverage - resources for research - secondary research techniques and searching strategies for government, parliamentary, business, social and economic indexes
