JRN525 Journalism Dissertation (32)

Abstract

The dissertation will examine a major aspect of journalism through original and independent research conducted by the student for this course. Students are introduced to a range of social science research methods, and critical issues in theoretical research. Students work over two Sessions to develop a research proposal, produce a literature review, obtain ethics approval, apply appropriate methodology and deliver a piece of theoretical research. Enrolment in this subject is restricted to those students who have obtained prior permission from the Postgraduate Journalism Course Coordinator to complete the Master of Arts (Journalism) by dissertation.

Enrolment restrictions

Master of Arts (Journalism). Students must have received permission from the Postgraduate Journalism Course Coordinator to complete the MA (Journalism) by dissertation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to define an original research problem in the journalism discipline
- demonstrate an ability to evaluate academic literature and establish a conceptual framework
- demonstrate awareness of ethical considerations in social science research and be able to meet University requirements for ethical research
- demonstrate an ability to evaluate research methods and develop a research design
- be able to systematically use a research design to gather data
- be able to analyse and interpret research data
- have written and presented an academic dissertation (10,000 words).

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- defining a research problem and justifying the field of inquiry - evaluating literature and establishing a conceptual framework - evaluating research methods and developing a research design - ethics in research - systematically gathering data - analysing and interpreting data - writing and presenting an extended academic report.
